Guilty Pleasures for May 25th, 2010

—————————— May 26th, 2010 ——————————

(I tried to resize this photo of Rachel Aggs, but Photoshop decided to make this pretty picture instead)

(♪) Charles Trees – Mahjongg
Honestly this sounds like Mux Mool x Debruit x Hudson Mohawke x etc. etc., but it is pretty damn catchy.

(♪) Kyle Hall – You Know What I feel
This one got panned by critics (and by that I mean I read one lukewarm review somewhere and one of my buddies isn’t into it), but it’s been out for a while and I come back to it more than Kaychunk, the A-side from this release. It reminds me that you can get super hard just with midrange, I love the implied vocals (“you know what I feel” over and over in that synth line), and those chord washes are amazing. This one seems like one of those tracks that sounds catchy and simple, but is really deceptively complex.

(♪) Guido – Orchestral Lab
Okay this one is super guilty. I know it’s been floating around for a while, but his album is out now and it is pretty weird. I almost went with one of the stranger numbers, but I couldn’t get over how awesome the horn synths are. Guido might sound like a kid in the ’90s abusing his dad’s Casio, but it works and the melodies are great (if not particularly coherent).

(♪) Trash Kit – Cadets
I don’t usually post pop punk, but after seeing the video for this song a few days ago (via Rouge’s Foam) it keeps floating back through my head. That little guitar riff is so insanely catchy, and the whole song is definitely a lot of fun. Also I now have a major crush on the guitarist/singer Rachel Aggs.

Guilty Pleasures for February 22nd, 2010

—————————— February 22nd, 2010 ——————————

(Photo is of magnified grooves in a record. Check out more here.)

(♪) Muhsinah – Scatterbrain (Radiohead Cover)
Radiohead is annoying, but they sure can write a good song. Muhsinah’s version of Scatterbrain is fresh and honest.

(♪) Mux Mool – Teal Trim
Mux Mool’s upcoming Skulltaste album is making lots of folks pretty excited, especially with the singles he just put out; still though, Teal Trim from his Viking Funeral EP is a lot of fun. Count me interested.

(♪) Dabrye – No Child of God
This is a throwback to early dubstep (oh 2002, I don’t miss you at all). If this came out today it would be a shock considering how unabashedly it uses LFO wobbles, but god damn this is a great track.

(♪) Salem – Redlights
Chillwave meets Satanism, but with drum machines. Love the aesthetic, and though their melodies could use some maturing I think these guys are worth keeping an eye on.

Guilty Pleasures 2

—————————— November 18th, 2009 ——————————

(♪) Darkstar – Aidy’s Girl’s A Computer
I’m pretty sure every Guilty Pleasures post I make will have a Hyperdub track. This one is somehow both totally unremarkable and fucking beautiful.

(♪) Memory Tapes – Plain Material
Dayve Hawk, the guy behind Memory Tapes (and tons of other projects), really loves that “in the back of your garage” vocal sound, and though I usually don’t, it’s great here. Catchy and fun.

(♪) Swede:art – Wonkycarz
From the excellent ABC Alphabeat beat tape, this song is definitely ploddingly enjoyable in an electronic teddybear’s picnic way. They downplay the whole thing as just a beat tape, but this free online release is solid quality.

(♪) Hudson Mohawke – FUSE
Hud Mo’s new album Butter is out, and has lots of fucking strange sounds on it. This track is downright pretty.

{Some RSS feeds still not picking this shit up, see post to listen}
